Photographs – Life is Art by May
A camera is another brush. May Masar's photographs show how an artist's way of seeing works inside a single frame.
Photography sits alongside drawing and painting on Life is Art by May. Where a painting is built up slowly, a photograph is a decision made in a fraction of a second: what to include, what to leave out, where the light falls and when to press the shutter. Those decisions rely on the same eye for composition and colour that guides May Masar's other artworks.
The Photography Collection at Life is Art by May
The photographs are grouped by period, in the same way as the Art portfolio, so the collection can be seen as part of one continuing story.
High School 2011–2014
The first photography collection was created during the high school years, between 2011 and 2014. It reflects a time of learning to see: noticing light and shadow, framing ordinary scenes in unexpected ways, and discovering that a familiar place can look completely new through a lens.
Like the early artworks, these photographs matter because they show a beginning. They capture the curiosity of someone exploring a new medium and finding out what it can say.
Seeing Life as Art
The name of this site describes the approach behind the photographs. Instead of waiting for extraordinary subjects, the camera looks for the beauty, humour and strangeness already present in daily life. A street, a window, a face or a pattern of light can all become a picture worth keeping.
